DigiCamp Summer 2023: Online Video Game Development Coding Camp for Girls

Have a daughter, niece or sister who’s curious about coding? As part of DigiBC’s ongoing commitment to education for youth, we have partnered with UTG Academy and IUGO Mobile Entertainment again to create this online video game development focused coding camp for girls that will be held over the summer.

This incredible opportunity is open to 8-13 year olds and is suitable for a wide range of novice and beginner coders (no previous experience is necessary). Additionally, a unique and new curriculum is implemented each year to build a camp experience that accommodates the skills and creative goals for every participant’s project ideas — more info below for returning campers from previous years!

The week-long session is project-based, and campers will create a HTML5 game using PixelPAD and Python. For this year’s curriculum, experienced UTG instructors will lead the class through the design and development of the iconic game, Flappy Bird. Students will then get to write code, customize gameplay features, update sprites, re-skin their game, and create a version that is uniquely their own. 🎮

ℹ️ What if a student has already taken one of the previous camps in 2021 or 2022?

The UTG team has modified this year’s curriculum to focus on the development of the well known game, Flappy Bird. Returning campers will get to work on a brand-new creation compatible with a range of beginner and novice levels, ensuring a novel experience.

DigiCamp Spring Break 2022: Online Video Game Development Camp for Girls

The first DigiCamp: Online Game Development Camp for Girls was such a success that we decided to run it again over spring break this year. These camps were an even bigger success having sold out weeks in advance! We developed this program again in partnership with UTG Academy and had IUGO Mobile Entertainment on board as the sponsor.

DigiCamp Summer 2021: Online Video Game Development Camp for Girls

DigiBC’s DigiCamp was created to give youth in the province who have not had the opportunity, the chance to learn skills, build confidence and broaden interest in careers within the creative technology sector. We’re happy to report that the first-ever DigiCamp: Online Game Development Camp for Girls which took place in July and August was a success! We developed this in partnership with Under the GUI (UTG) Academy and had IUGO Mobile Entertainment on board as the sponsor. Huge thanks to both for helping turn this idea into a reality.

The camp was specifically designed for girls aged 9-13 years old and students got to create an HTML5 game using PixelPAD and the Python programming language. UTG Academy instructors (Lydia Assion-Nielsen, Mia Gieselmann & Linda Lee) tuned the curriculum to ensure students had the opportunity to create an app that was uniquely their own. The camp also featured IUGO guest speakers, Amie Hulme (Technical Director), Thais Campos (Quality Analyst) and Reina Magica (Game Designer), who shared their experiences, tips and secrets from working in the video game industry. Below are links to some of the amazing games that the campers made and the instructor’s report for the July camp can be read here.
