In B.C.’s thriving creative technology sector, small, and medium-sized companies are the backbone of home-grown innovation. But for many young professionals who are just starting out, breaking into the field, and growing within it, can feel like a challenge.
Many large studios have well-developed internal learning systems and mentorship structures to guide early-career employees. But smaller studios and scrappy startups often don’t have the same resources.
This is where DigiBC’s new mentorship program, DigiConnect, comes in. Launching in May 2025, the program is designed to forge connections and help entry-level employees explore their options, with guidance from experienced industry pros in a range of specialties. The program will help mentees build the skills and contacts they need to succeed, no matter the size of their workplace.
Forging Cross-Industry Connections
The DigiConnect mentorship program goes beyond matching mentees with experienced professionals in their own company or field, encouraging cross-company, cross-disciplinary, and even cross-sector collaboration. The goal is to help mentees gain insights they wouldn’t typically have access to.
“We’re trying to build on the mentorship experience found at larger companies for people who might choose to go work for a smaller studio,” says Loc Dao, DigiBC Executive Director. “They can connect with somebody at another company, or even across sectors, expanding their professional network and skill set.” Want to learn more about the business side of gaming? A mentee could be paired with a finance professional, for example. Looking to transition into a different area of creative tech? The program creates space for those conversations.
“The more connections mentees make, the more doors open – whether job openings, opportunities to collaborate or new career paths,” says Loc. “These organic networking moments happen all the time in big companies, and the mentorship program will help ensure they happen for those working in small to medium-sized studios, too.”
Why Become a Mentor?
It’s not just mentees who benefit from this type of connection and collaboration – it’s an opportunity for mentors to grow, as well. DigiBC provides mentors with access to exclusive training sessions and industry webinars, for example, allowing them to hone their leadership and communication skills. Plus, they get to connect with other mentors, expanding their own networks along the way.
“There’s a sense of paying it forward and giving back to the community,” says Loc. “Mentors can share their unique experiences and perspectives, help shape the next generation, and contribute to a more connected, inclusive industry.” Not to mention it’s a chance for mentors to gain fresh perspectives from up-and-coming talent and strengthen ties across B.C.’s creative tech sector.
How it Works
Mentors and mentees will sign up for DigiConnect via an online platform, and be paired based on matching criteria. Once paired, mentors and mentees will meet monthly (virtually or in person) to work toward identified objectives and measure progress.
Over the course of each mentorship pairing, DigiBC will provide training and resources, including support in identifying goals, setting tasks, and reviewing progress – along with dedicated support staff to help participants navigate the process.
DigiBC is piloting the program with two cohorts, each lasting four months – one in the summer and one in the fall – with student mentees from DigiBC’s Work Placement Program. But the plan is to grow.
“In the future, we plan to open it up to junior and mid-level employees across the industry,” Loc says. “Anyone eager to grow their career in creative tech will be welcome to sign up and be paired with an industry mentor, ensuring that mentorship isn’t just limited to new graduates.”
