Knowing the importance of fostering talent and providing practical experience to help grow the creative tech industry in BC, DigiBC, supported by the Province of British Columbia, has developed the groundbreaking Work Placement Program.

This initiative is set to provide work placement opportunities for students within the animation, visual effects, and XR (Extended Reality) industries across BC. DigiBC’s Work Placement Pilot Program is a comprehensive solution aimed at supporting post-secondary students in BC by offering well-managed work placements in creative technology companies. The program also equips employers with the necessary tools to make hiring and onboarding students a seamless process. This initiative ensures that students receive valuable real-world experience while employers gain access to top-tier, motivated talent.

Support for Students: Resources for Placement

Students enrolled in qualifying ACE-WIL post-secondary programs in BC are eligible to participate in the Work Placement Pilot Program. This opportunity allows them to secure four- or eight-month placements at leading creative technology companies across the province.

Tailored Resources for Success

These resources are designed to give students a head start in their careers, providing them with the knowledge and connections needed to succeed. To ensure students are well-prepared for their placements, the program provides a range of customized resources, including:

  • Orientation Workshops: Tailored sessions to help students acclimate to the professional environment.
  • E-learning Resources: Online materials to enhance their technical and professional skills.
  • Mentoring Support: Access to industry professionals who can provide guidance and advice.
  • Networking Opportunities: Events and platforms to help students build their professional network in the creative tech industry.

Support for Employers: Structures to Ensure Success

Hiring and onboarding students can be a challenging process for many employers. DigiBC’s Work Placement Pilot Program addresses these challenges by offering a structured approach to recruitment, administration, and financial support.

Proven Resources for Employers

These resources are designed to make the process of hiring and managing student placements as easy and effective as possible, ensuring a positive experience for both students and employers. Employers participating in the program will benefit from:

  • Recruitment Assistance: Support in identifying and selecting the right candidates for their needs.
  • Administrative Support: Help with the paperwork and processes involved in hiring students.
  • Financial Subsidies: Access to financial supports that subsidize qualifying placements, making it more affordable to bring on student talent.
  • Onboarding and Management Resources: Tools and best practices to ensure a smooth integration of students into the workplace.

How the Pilot Program Works

The Work Placement Pilot Program is structured to provide 170 student work placements over four cohorts, starting in September 2024. DigiBC’s Work Placement Office will collaborate with creative tech employers and post-secondary institutions across the province to identify and advertise student opportunities within each cohort. The office will also play a key role in matching students to placements that suit their talents and interests.

  • Cohort 1: September – December 2024
  • Cohort 2: January – April 2025
  • Cohort 3: May – August 2025
